Project 02

Placing Parentheses

02

During this project we will be learning to place parentheses if you can do this you need not have Order of Operations. Also you will be deciphering word problems in part 3.

Part 1: What Parenteses do in math

Parentheses provide a break up of large equations into smaller pieces and provide an order to the operations through an act of nesting don't just take my word for it though take a look at these definitions for "parentheses in mathematics." Warning when entering wolf territory we will only be using the first meaning.

Part 2: Placing Parentheses

Parenthases first you need a large equation such as you will find in the example below. Then you first place the parenthases around all of your negative numbers.

Next you find your multiplication and division and put these in parenthases nesting from left to right

Finally you nest your addition and subtraction from left to right

To solve then you work from your innermost parentheses and move outword until you arrive at one answer.

When your ready give it a try.

Part 3: Deciphering word problems

Next is probably the most confusing piece but we are going to have some fun with it :). First, I would like you to go to Alternate words and find some different ways to say add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Then I would like you to write your own word problem to the example expression in part 2.

Your turn to try

Example

Wow! done already! Thats amazing!

Next I know it can be difficult to understand what word problems are saying even with these neat alternate words.

This is due to a bad correlation between math's formal talk and English's alternate meanings and slang. "I know slang yuck!"

Therefore, in order to determine meanings of words that can be two or more different things we need to look at the context they are being used in. For example: Area could mean that area over there or the area of a triangle. So if I were to say go find the area of the triangle that is in that area of the room it is slightly confusing. Therefore, look at how it is used in the sentence to determine which meaning the word problem is asking for. Finally, I would like you to write a word problem that uses at least one word with multiple meanings using more than one meaning. Then complete this word problem to show your mastery. If you are finished or would like help with anything email the dragonarch below with parts 1,2, and 3 OR your question.
